Wow; it’s a busy holiday week! We’re rolling together 3 different topics into this one post, to encourage you to keep your holiday plans local and stress-free!
Sweet Potatoes! Who can resist these for Thanksgiving?! And did you know that NC is the number one sweet potato producing state? Almost 50% of the nation’s annual crop is grown here in NC. Here’s an easy recipe for these tasty tubers:
Mix these ingredients and pour into a buttered 8×8 casserole dish:
- 3 cups cooked sweet potatoes
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
- 1/2 cup water
Combine these ingredients and sprinkle over the potatoes:
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup flour
- 1 cup chopped pecans
- 1/3 cup soft butter
Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees and enjoy!
And for some added merriment, how about sweet potato vodka!
Smashfest! We’ve all heard about Black Friday and all the assorted issues that are associated with this day of conspicuous consumption. Our friends at the Scrap Exchange have the perfect antidote: Smashfest! Now in its fourth year, this shopping alternative event lets customers get their rage out by buying breakable items and choosing to either smash them, or rescue and reuse them. There will also be art-making, live performances and food. Join in the fun from 4-9pm on Friday, November 28th.
Small Business Saturday! Support our community by shopping locally this Saturday, November 29th. Many local stores will have special events all day. Over at Flyleaf Books, you can meet some of our favorite local authors at Indies First Day. Sarah Dessen, Nathan Kotecki and Ursula Vernon will be booksellers for the day to show their support for local book stores.
Have a safe and enjoyable holiday!
